I. Jamestown Settlement Established by Virginia Company in 1607 Almost FAILED because of settlers’ unpreparedness, poor location, weak leadership. 1619 – Establish House of Burgesses – A representative self-government (democracy?) that made laws for the colony Economy Cash Crop – Tobacco Indentured Servants – Under contract to serve for a period of time to pay of debt Slavery

II. Plymouth Colony Puritans (those who wanted to purify the Church of England) and Separatists (those who wanted to separate from the Anglican Church) left England because they were persecuted for their beliefs Came to America for religious freedom, not tolerance Drafted the Mayflower Compact Early example of self-government (democracy) in Colonial America

IV. Mercantilism

A. Mercantilism – Economic system in which a country exports more than it imports, gains precious metals (gold), and imports raw materials from its colonies to sell back in the form of manufactured goods. B. Navigation Acts (1600s) – Laws passed by Britain to prohibit the colonies from selling certain raw materials to other countries. C. Salutary Neglect – Britain did not directly interfere in all colonial affairs as long as Britain made money each year. Allowed colonies to establish their own social, political, and economic systems.
