3. BASIC 1 COURSE MY LEARNING Course Objective: Students demonstrate that they have clicked into English and can accommodate themselves personally to the language. They should demonstrate that they made a personal commitment to learning, are motivated, and have developed basic habits and behaviors necessary for language learning to occur. Course Project: Students keep entries for every unit. At the end of the course, students participate in a portfolio exhibit where they share their work with classmates. Students socialize portfolios. 3

5. Unit one: All about you Unit Objective: Students understand and use tools to adapt themselves to their new English-speaking environment. Unit Task: Open an only-English email account and send an email. Students open a personal e-mail account which they dedicate for use only in English and send their first message from the CCA lab. Portfolio Entry: Print-out of e-mail sent and received 5

6. Unit two: In class Unit Objective: : Students should connect their English class experience to their immediate social network. Unit Task: My learning Kit Students will list the most relevant tools for their learning and how to use them. Portfolio Entry: Learning Kit diagram with examples about how to use learning tools to learn English. 6

7. Unit three: Favorite People Unit Objective: Students should connect their English class experience to their immediate social network. Unit Task: A very important person (VIP) Students share their social network with their new classmates by designing a profile of a person who is very important in their lives and sharing that portrait with their classmates. Portfolio Entry: A written description of the VIP with photocopies of scanned pictures. 7

8. Unit four: Everyday life Unit Objective: Students will reflect on their routines and habits with the purpose of finding time to include specific activities to practice and reinforce their English. Unit Task: Time for English Students will prepare a poster with the weekly schedule in which they clearly establish a time to carry out given activities to complement their classroom learning experience. Portfolio Entry: The time for English schedule. Students hand in their portfolios. 8

BASIC 2 COURSE MY SOCIAL SCENE Course Objective: Students demonstrate that they have created bonds with other classmates based on common interests and have begun to share these interests together in meaningful ways. Course Project: Portfolio Exhibit part II. My social scene Students show now how they have created links with other students based on common interests and preferences. Students keep entries for every unit as in Basic 1 9

11. Unit five: Free time Unit Objective: Students should be able to create small groups with classmates who have similar free- time activities, favorite TV shows, web sites or other interests. Unit Task: Things in common. Students make a poster presenting common interests the people in the group share including visual aids. Portfolio Entry: List of activities shared in the group using visuals 11

12. Unit six: Neighborhoods Unit Objective: Students will link outside activities to class relationships and learn how these social networks can help them learn and practice English. Unit Task: Let’s go there. Students will identify places in Bogotá related to their common interests, and if possible, visit as a group or separately. They will write a report about those places. Portfolio Entry: Report on places and activities in Bogotá and their opinions about them. 12

13. Unit seven: Out and about Unit Objective: : Students will talk about sports, exercise and fitness activities and explain how those activities relate to personal interests, goals and well- being. Unit Task: What’s going on? Students will write a journal entry in which they recommend sports, exercise and fitness activities to their classmates. Portfolio Entry: Report on places and activities in Bogotá and their opinions about them. 13

14. Unit eight: Shopping Unit Objective: Students will describe places to shop, malls and shopping centers, and make recommendations about them. Unit Task: Shopping tips. Students write a recommendation of a shopping center they consider especially good and convenient, including the specific characteristics or reasons why they chose that place. Portfolio Entry: Written recommendation of a mall or other good place to shop. 14

15. BASIC 3 COURSE MY TOWN Course Objective: Students should demonstrate that they can describe places and their attractions in Colombia and other places. The project will reflect their understanding of their surroundings as well as their ability to relate to past experiences. Course Project: Portfolio Exhibit part III. My town Students keep adding entries to their portfolios for every unit. The use of visuals and texts show a higher degree of elaboration since this portfolio will be shown to other students. 15

17. Unit nine: A wide world Unit Objective: Students should be able to talk about places in Colombia and their main attractions Unit Task: Things in common. Students prepare a description of the most important landmarks and attractions in their own city with appropriate visuals (brochure). Portfolio Entry: Description of the landmarks and attractions in the city included in their presentations. 17

18. Unit ten: Busy lives Unit Objective: Students should be able to talk about one of their busiest weeks. Unit Task: Where did you go? and What did you do? Students prepare a collage in which they will express with pictures what they did in one of their busiest weeks. Portfolio Entry: The collage including visuals and text describing the activities. 18

19. Unit eleven: looking back Unit Objective: Students should be able to talk about past experiences and their impressions about them. Unit Task: The anecdote. Students prepare, write and exchange with a classmate an important anecdote in their lives (Their first day of high school/work, a funny story, an important personal event). Portfolio Entry: Report about the anecdote. 19

20. Unit twelve: Fabulous food Unit Objective: Students should be able to talk about their eating habits and the characteristics of their favorite restaurants in the city. Unit Task: Eating out. Students should write a review about their favorite restaurant or about one they would like to go to including all those relevant aspect for their choice. Portfolio Entry: Recommendation about their favorite restaurant 20
