Coordinate Graphing Dorinda Forsythe Cobb 6 th Grade Campus GPISD
3
TEKS Objective 6.7 The student uses coordinate geometry to identify location in two dimensions.
4
Purpose The learner will locate and name points on a coordinate plane using ordered pairs of non- negative rational numbers.
5
When will I ever use coordinate graphing in real life? Police officers, fire fighters, and taxi drivers all use coordinate graphing daily when using maps. The GPS in your car uses latitude and longitude (x,y) to locate your desired destination. On Star and 911 emergency personnel use GPS to find you in an emergency.
6
Coordinate Graph A coordinate plane has a pair of perpendicular lines that form the axes. The vertical line is the y axis, and the horizontal line is the x axis. y x
7
How to name points. An ordered pair is (x,y) ‘Start at (0,0), this is where the two axes cross. The first number in the ordered pair represents the distance to travel on the x axis. The second number in the ordered pair represents the distance that you travel vertically (up or down) in the plane.

Guided Practice Name the points y x...... a b c d e f a:(, )b:(, ) c:(, )d:(, ) e:(, )f:(, )

Independent Practice Go to this web site and complete the activity. http://teacher.scholastic.com/lessonrepr o/reproducibles/profbooks/brainboostma th.pdf
10
Conclusion Students use coordinates to locate points and travel on a plane.
