Organisation of staff 350 people are employed in the childcare sector. 315 of these have Motala municipality as their employer. 150 pre-school teachers 140 assistants 25 others

Children/hours 2 000 children (1-5 year) 1 865 in municipality child-care centers 135 in private child-care centers 270 use their right to 15 h/week (unemployed and parents with newborn and siblings) 18 children/section Opening hours: twelve hours/day (06.00 am- 18.00 pm/06.30 am-18.30 pm) Average hours/child: 30-40 h/week

Staff education/qualification assistents: 3 years of upper secondary school pre-school teachers: 3,5 years (210 p) at university (210 p) at university

”Competence growth” Headmaster is responsible for each childcare-center. Special days for staff training is organized in the municipality. All staff is offered a university course through Gävle University

Skilled/unskilled Each group of 18 children are staffed with 3 personnel Typically 2 pre-school teachers and 1 assistant. The objective is to have 3 pre-school teachers. Pre-school teacher = skilled Assistant = ”unskilled” (3 years of upper secondary school)

Leadership Pedagogical degree or equivalent All headmasters take the governmental headmaster education (today 2 year).

Childcare-profession In Sweden it is a problem to get pre-school teacher with proper education. The last couple of years the students have preferred to get a teachers degree. Introducing the Curriculum for the Pre- School (-98) was meant to raise the level of education.

The Sagene model Apply existing knowledge to improve quality of Motala pre-school sector. Equip employees to be better at in a early stage detect potential problems and adopt to new needs in society. Improve the attractiveness of being pre- school teacher.
