Properly Define It Four types of love in the Greek language:  (eros)  (storge)  (phileo)  (agape)

Properly Define It Eros  attraction between male and female –The WORD is not in the New Testament Genesis 4:1 And Adam knew Eve his wife… Matthew 1:25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.

Properly Define It Eros is a sensual, sexual love –Creates the warm fuzziez and the adrenaline rush –DOES NOT LAST Outside of marriage, it must be controlled A relationship built on it will crumble –II Samuel 13:15 Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.

Properly Define It Storge  family affection – Only once in NT Romans 12:10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another –The lack of it is mentioned Romans 1:31 …without natural affection… (II Timothy 3:2-3)

Properly Define It Phileo  friendship love –Matthew 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me… –Matthew 26:48 Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. –John 20:2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved…

Properly Define It Agape  affection reverence, prompt obedience, grateful recognition of benefits received; to regard the welfare of others –“[Agape] is wider, embracing especially the judgment and the deliberate assent of the will as a matter of principle, duty and propriety”

Properly Define It I John  love of Christians towards each other John 3:16  love of God towards man Galatians 2:20  love of Christ towards man John 3:35  love of God towards Christ Luke 7:44-47  love of man towards God Matthew 5:44  love of man towards enemies I Corinthians 12:31 …a more excellent way

Biblically Receive It One of the most often misunderstood aspects of love: our love for God –How would most people answer, “Do you love God?” –How would most people answer, “What is loving God?”

Biblically Receive It I John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous –Why? –Agape is sacrificing oneself to please another (Ephesians 5:25)

Biblically Receive It Jude 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God… –Romans 8:35, 38-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord

Have you properly defined love? Have you biblically received it?
