Hook Fact: The more you read the better your IQ. Figurative language: Reading is seeing the world through a magnifying glass. Quote: “Reading without reflecting is like eating without digesting.” - Edmund Burke Imagery: Reading is hearing the sweet melodies of the colorful forest birds. Surprising statement: It is said that numerous seniors do not read at their grade level. Common knowledge: Many people value the convenience that electronic devices bring to the communication needs of the 21 st century. Anecdote – My mom has to go to my grandma’s house to help her read her bills and pay them off. etc.

The Bridge The bridge is the information after the hook and before the thesis statement. These are details from the prompt, general statements about the topic. Anyone should be able to determine what the prompt asked you to do by reading your first three or four sentences before the thesis statement.

Example Introductory Paragraph Hook Bridge General statement/ reasoning/ evidence/claim What you will write about (topic)/ What is your stand (view with no “I”), and how will you support it (3 topics for body paragraphs). Transition sentence

Example: “We watched a low budget science fiction movie last night for two hours, what a waste of time.” There are many different types of un-needed, time consuming activities featured nowadays, but the most prominent and accepted one is the television. Despite its vast popularity, it is causing very damaging effects on our civilization. The T.V. started out as a small box with black and white pictures, however it has grown into a device that is time wasting, mind numbing and causes bad habits. Time is being wasted in the life of teens and adults who watch T.V. instead they should be using time more productively.

Don’t forget your Concluding Paragraph Touch back Look to the future Go to the heart End with a zinger + Restate your thesis ( In a totally different way ) Show your readers that your essay is meaningful and useful. Synthesize do not summarize.
