1 DLESE-IMS Metadata, ADN Metadata and the DLESE Catalog System

2 DLESE-IMS Metadata Framework Loosely based on IMS Uses a DTD; so no data-typing Describes: geospatial (badly) science and geography standards No vocabulary enforcement XML standard is shifting from DTD’s to schemas with OAI choosing to use schemas

3 ADN Metadata Framework A strongly data-typed common XML-schema based framework for ADEPT, NASA & DLESE Describes geospatial, collection, science and geography standards review, models, temporal (all under development) Can do error checking at catalog time rather than ingest time Supports modular framework development Hybrid of IMS and DC but with specific community-driven fields.

6 What can the Catalog System do? Contribute: create initial metadata records Discover: provides an internal metadata record search capability using controlled vocabularies & keywords. Can also search over resource content when available Manage: move & edit; keyword & fielded search, some controlled vocabulary search; QA processes are done here Share: share records between collections using OAI (not yet implemented)

7 DLESE Catalog System (Specs) Structure: XML files in flat directories (no database); Uses DLESE-IMS metadata; no ADN Assumption: unique mapping between library ID and URLs Underlying Indexes: (what is discoverable) Metadata index Resource content index Technical Specification: IE 4.x or higher, Netscape: 6.0, Lucene 1.0, Tomcat 3.2, Java 1.3, JDOM Beta 7

8 Types of Searches Over Metadata Metadata Index Search ManageDiscover 1. Keyword Over any editable field (includes URL, org) geology:657 Over description, title, topic, resource type & grade level geology: 467 2. Controlled Vocabulary Implemented over topic, resource type and grade level +topic:geology: 580 Over topic, resource type & grade level checkbox geology:434 3. Fielded Over editable fields +topic:geology: 580 Not supported

9 Actual Tasks Requested 1.Find all records that Holly Devaul created. 2.Find all records that ADEPT has contributed. 3.Cataloger Goodman forgets her DLESE ID but knows her resource is about hurricanes. 4.Cataloger Tierney wants to create a relationship between records 943 & 946. 5.Find resources that cover salinity.

10 Using the DLESE Catalog System 1.Download as is (pre-release version) requires high-level software engineer own cataloging own QA to be in DLESE: meet collections accession policy ship records to DLESE via OAI 2.Hosted on a DLESE Server (Policy guidance needed) DPC does not provide cataloging and QA unless other arrangements have been made DPC provides system setup and maintenance

11 Benefits of Catalog System DLESE Objects to collections Collection management Interoperability with Partners & NSDL Collection Builders Integrated system supporting collections development Can support distributed development Makes interoperability transparent

12 Collection Branding (Identification) 1.Through OAI Harvest 2.Local Use of the Catalog System 3.Hosted Use of the Catalog System Applies to accepted DLESE Collections only Need thumbnail logo Need collection name and label
