2 Roman Dairy  Butter was not used for cooking, however it made a good plaster for wounds  Romans extracted milk from the goat, cow, and ewe.  They used the milk to make cheese Ewe’s cheese = more digestible BUT tasted bad Goat cheese = less digestible BUT tasted the best

3 Roman Grain  The word frumentum was a general term Romans applied to all grain grown for food  Not the most important crop to Romans; they made it their 6 th priority after vineyards, vegetable gardens, willow copse, olive groves, and meadows  Much like today, wheat was the main grain used in society

4 Harvesting the Grain  It was harvested in the Spring and Summer according to soil by hand  Ox plows were sometimes used but only on level ground  The grain is threshed by a flail, or beaten by a simple machine
