TO UNDERSTAND THAT TEXTS ARE WRITTEN FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES, AND THAT THE CONTENT OF TEXTS CHANGE, DEPENDING ON THE PURPOSE..

The text type is determined by the audience and purpose of your text. The text type is the format you use to reach your audience. For example: If your audience is teenagers and your purpose is to persuade them to go to the movies, you may post on facebook. However if your audience is your parents, you would change your text type, it may be a letter or a speech arguing your point of view.

Some text types are more common than others in persuasive writing. Some of the most common text types are: Advertisements (print and film/TV) Letters Opinion articles (newspapers and magazines) Speeches Newsletter articles Presentations Cartoons

Read each of the text types on the following slides. For each text type, you will need to identify the text type, the purpose, audience, structures and features of the text. You will then need to answer the questions about each of the texts.

Who wrote this letter? To whom is this letter addressed? Why do you think the letter is addressed to this person? What is Rachel complaining about? What do you think a superintendent is? What is this advertisement about? Who do you think the intended audience is? Why? What is more prominent, the text, the image or both? Why do you think this is? What is the setting of the cartoon? Who are the characters/people represented in the cartoon? Why have these characters/people been used? Describe what you see in the cartoon. What do you think the cartoon wants the audience to think/feel/do? Is the cartoon effective? ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN YOUR BOOK
