1) Bell Ringer: What are valence electrons? What is the difference between an ionic and molecular compound? 2) Worksheet #13 3) QUIZ #6
4
Cations are ions with a POSITIVE charge. Anions are ions with a NEGATIVE charge. Draw the funny way to remember cations and anions:
5
Atoms bonded together with an IONIC bond are called compounds. An ionic bond is a METAL bonded with a NONMETAL. Draw the crystal lattice structure for sodium chloride:
6
Refers to the ratio of ions in a compound NaCl has a ratio of 1:1 (1 to 1). MgCl 2 has a ratio of 1:2 (1 to 2). AlCl 3 has a ratio of 1:3 (1 to 3).
7
Sodium
12
Charge that an atom will have if made into an ion. Na becomes Na +, so its oxidation number is POSITIVE. Cl becomes Cl -, so its oxidation number is NEGATIVE.
13
If I combine magnesium and fluorine, what will its empirical formula be? MgF 2 Sodium oxide (Sodium and oxygen) Na 2 O Magnesium oxide MgO
14
Lithium oxide
15
Do on your own right now and then share with a partner. SHOW YOUR WORK!! The answer is MgO
