3 Woodrow Wilson’s Diplomacy  Wilson sends in the Marines to seize the Mexican port of Veracruz to overthrow Huerta. 5 WW I  June 1914, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed by a Bosnian revolutionary from the group Black Hand.  On July 28th, Austria declares war on Serbia. On August 1, Germany declares war on Russia. Then Germany declares war on France.  The Allies (France, Russia, Great Britain, and Italy) versus The Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria)  Germany and France became locked in trench warfare. Lasts for 3 years

9 American Neutrality  America declares neutrality (no side)  Most Americans favor the allied side.  Wilson’s cabinet was pro-British.  The British tried very hard to gain American support  US banks have given loans to the Allies which means they will only be paid back if Allies win.

10 Moving Toward War  Most Americans support Allies but do not want war  Germany began to use many U-Boats to destroy the British blockades.
