2 Did the Churches support the regime  Hitler tried to control the German citizens through many ways, such as propaganda and fear.  Religion was also a major factor of German life with the vast majority being protestant.

3 Did the Churches support the regime  Reasons for:  Initially, German churches supported the Nazi regime, they were after all led mostly by Germans, and saw the great progress being made as a sign of Germany’s successes.  Furthermore the concordat led to a greater amount of faith in Hitler's willingness to uphold the rights of both Protestants and Catholics within German territory.  Additionally, both the Nazi regime and the churches were in favour of anti-Semitism, as was typical of the era’s Zeitgeist, and this led to both the regime and the church becoming natural allies in their perceived ‘crusade’ against the Jewish people.  Many Churches were also fearful of the regime, they had seen how Hitler had handled his enemies, such as Rohm, and also in how Hitler had dealt with communists and socialists during his rise to power, and his consolidation thereof. As such the churches were supportive of Hitler in order to protect their own institutions from Hitler’s fist.

4 Did the Churches support the regime  Reasons against  Some high ranking church officials, such as the Bishop Clemens von Galen, preached several sermons that criticised the Nazi’s policies, and their regime. Showing us that church support of the Nazi regime was not unified, and most certainly not absolute.  Furthermore Pope Pius XI initially agreed with the concordat, but became disillusioned with Hitler when it was shown that the regime failed to uphold their agreement with the Catholic church, evidence that even the upper echelons of the church were losing faith in Hitler’s willingness to protect their church.  Additionally Dietrich Bonhofer broadcasted a critique of the fuhrerprinzip, which openly regarded as hostile to Christian values. Dietrich even reportedly encouraged trainee pastors to resist Nazism, and stay true to the values that the church should have embodied. Bonhofer’s views were so distinctive that her was eventually sent to a concentration camp, where he was executed on the 5 th April 1945

5 Did the Churches support the regime  To Conclude:  We believe that the Churches mainly supported Hitler due to shared ideological views, such as strong autocratic leadership, and anti- Semitism, represented by the Pope as the head of the Catholic church, and the centuries of history of anti-Semitism within Europe. However it should be noted that the support was not universal, and many Christians, at least privately, opposed the tyranny imposed by the Nazi’s Regime. Just seen a Nazi going 88 mph on the motorway, Must have been going back to the Fuhrer
