Today’s Target I can… Explain how latitude and longitude work. Identify and define the terms associated with latitude and longitude. Apply my understanding to a real map.
3
Is this Right?
5
East West, North South on The Earth X axis = Equator (latitude) Y axis =Prime Meridian (longitude) Latitude & Longitude are the 2 grid points by which you can locate any point on Earth. Y X
6
The Prime Meridian runs through Greenwich outside of London, England.
7
How do we remember which is which?? Latitude lays…it’s like when you climb a ladder! Longitude is like a long piece of spaghetti you’re holding! Alphabetical order!! Latitude comes before Longitude! Y X

East West, North South on the Earth Each of the four quarters of the Earth are designated by North or South AND East or West. The N tells us we’re north of the Equator. The S tells us we’re south of the Equator. The E tells us we’re east of the Prime Meridian. The W tells us that we’re west of the Prime Meridian. N S E W

East West, North South on the Earth (N, W) (N, E) (S, W) (S, E) That means all points in North America will have a North latitude and a West longitude because it is North of the Equator and West of the Prime Meridian. What would be the latitude and longitude directions in Australia? (?, ?) If you said South and East…you’re right!

Now that you have learned how latitude and longitude work, you are going to find the coordinates around the room. -You will use a separate sheet of paper -Number that sheet 1-10 -Find the coordinate of each corrisponding number -Remember, N/S come first Find the Coordinates

Challenge: What Did You Learn? Use your notes and an atlas to complete the follow up assignment. ASK A QUESTION if you get stuck!
