LAN – BPL How Does It All Tie Together?

Maximizing the Potential of a Stranded Asset like Portables and areas difficult to use standard wiring techniques. In-Building BPL a ‘Proven’ Enabler as an IP Service Delivery Platform In-Building BPL - How it Works Problems Agenda

With a few (non-intrusive) connections, you can equip a facility with a ubiquitous LAN transport. ( our vendors are saying a one day install) No Impact to Operations of the facility/property and low disruption for rapid installation. We do not have to guess as to where the wires in the ceiling go. Teachers have as many internet drops as we want to supply. We would not be limited by the number of ports on the switch. Each Plug would be assigned an IP. Fewer failure points like RJ-45s, switches, modules, and poor wiring installation. Advantages

High Speed Internet Access Internet Today 85MBPS Shared Innovating to 200 MBPS Voice Over IP Quality of Service (QoS) LAN Includes VLAN Capabilities WiFi Connectivity Easy Placement of Wireless Access Points (WAPs) Surveillance In-Elevators, Common Areas, etc. Energy Management Easy Connection to Energy elements for Monitor/Control More Advantages

Intelligent Building Approach

1.Energy Information Current & Historic Energy Consumption 2.Energy Controls Thermostats (Pre-cool building) Remote Access Energy Management Services

Web Portal with remote control. Broadband Energy Networks Smart Thermostat Existing site

In-Building BPL What Does it Do? 1.Transforms the Electrical Wiring of commercial buildings into an Intelligent & Secure High-Speed Network Platform 2. Provides Users a Ubiquitous Transport for LAN, Internet & all IP Based Applications (Electrical Outlets become Data Ports) 3. Uses Electrical Wiring /Media only, does not effect or use Electrical current 4. Maximizes the use of the building’s existing electrical infrastructure

In-Building BPL How it Works

In-Building BPL Network Element Functionality Gateway Connects to Internet via Ethernet; converts signal to BPL signal; accepts data from an existing network and distributes it to the Injector device Injector Wired directly to building’s electrical system; injects BPL signal into the building’s electrical system Repeater Propagates BPL signal, accepts data from the Gateway & distributes it to the Injectors CPE Connects to a computer or any IP device & to an Electrical outlet to access the Internet/Services

Where is this deployed? 1.Currently there are no LAN solutions that I was able to find other than those out of state. 2.There are several BPL city wide projects. This does not include but will by the end of 2009…..all of the TXU customers. 3.The city of Burnet has a BPL project under way and in testing.

“Currently there are no complaints with the Generation II equipment. Due to the implementation of “Notching” in the Generation II chipsets, the noise level in the 40db range is substantially lower.” Ed Hare AARL The Major Problem (Noise for Radio Operators)

Speed At this time, BPL – LAN is able to provide a shared 85 mbps connection. This is most likely somewhat slower depending on the numbers and kinds of devices.

What does it mean for the people in this area? Crews will install Power Line Couplers on the existing wires. Install time about 30 minutes. Each home will be provided a meter that will all ready have the new chipset installed.

TXU Project Timeline Fiber Infrastructure begins early third quarter of 2006. BPL equipment installation begins late third quarter of 2006. BPL enabled AMR meters deployed fourth quarter of 2006. TXU Electric Delivery anticipates having a minimum of 10,000 BPL enabled AMR units by years end. Additionally, Current intends to offer retail broadband service by years end. Project is scheduled to be complete in 2010
