Today Chris is 12 years old, Chris has three younger cousins: Isaiah, Alyssa and Corves. They are 2, 3, and 8 years old respectively. The following mathematical sentences show that Chris is 6 times as old as Isaiah, 12 = 6 x 2 4 times as old as Alyssa, 12 = 4 x 3 1 and ½ times as old as Corves, 12 = 1 ½ x 8 What do you notice about the first two examples as opposed to the third example?

Whole Number Factors or Whole Number Divisors 2, 3, 4 and 6 can be multiplied by another whole number to get 12. We call 2, 3, 4 and 6 whole number factors or whole number divisors of 12 8 is a whole number but we cannot multiply it by another whole number to get to 12 We will simply use the word factor to refer to whole number factors
