2 The shared way of life of a group of people. “Way of life” includes types of foods, types of clothing, values and beliefs, customs, etc.

3 1. ethnic culture- includes family history, origin, traditions, foods, religious beliefs, and family celebrations. 2. youth culture- Examples: fashions, language expressions, video games, and music you share with other young people. 3. popular culture- When something is popular, it is enjoyed by a large number of people of all ages. Popular culture includes all of the latest fads. Examples: fashions, fast food, television shows, etc.

4 4. techno culture- refers to the way of life of people who use all the latest technology. Examples: Internet, email, cell phones, etc. 5. school culture- examples: team names, school spirit, uniforms, etc.

5 material culture: Parts of culture that you can see and touch, such as furniture, cell phones, and clothing. non-material culture: Parts of culture that cannot be seen or touched, such as ideas (freedom and honesty), beliefs, values, religion and music.

6 Think it Through 1. Include a minimum of 5 examples of youth culture.

7 Think it Through #3 -Must use images. -Can use some words. - Should be completed NEATLY!!

8 1. Beliefs and Values -religious beliefs, ex. Hinduism, Christianity, etc. -beliefs about relationships between boys and girls -how people raise children -educate children -human rights and freedoms

9 2. Government -Democracy- Canada – People elect their government leaders and have regular elections. -There are different types of democratic governments. -ruled by a royal family -dictator (one-person rule) -the military

10 3. Economy - An economy is the way people use their resources to satisfy their needs and wants. - In some cultures, the economy is based on: - A) farming – rural areas - B) industries and businesses – large cities -Wealthy countries vs. Impoverished countries

11 4. History -Our history is part of what makes us Canadians. It gives us a sense of our identity. -People from many different nations helped to build Canada.

12 5. Expressions of Culture -Examples: Stories, music, paintings, dance, language, sports, and fashion.

13 6. Technology -refers to any tool, machine, or equipment invented by humans -The tools a culture uses can affect people’s lives in a very big way. EX. the wheel.

14 The environment has an important influence on how we live, but it is NOT an element of culture because it is not something people have created.

15 oral history- spoken stories that people tell about their past, passed down from generation to generation. family- stories pass on lessons in life and cultural traditions. school- pass on the knowledge and values of society.

16 society- involves everything people do when they live, work, and play together in communities peers – we learn cultural behaviors from our friends / peers. Media- TV, books, internet, etc. give information about our own culture and the culture of others.

17 Institutions- are permanent events (Canada Day), organizations, or services (free health care) that a society creates. School is an institution for education.
