1
A developer proposes to build a large apartment complex next to the Cedar River. What are the likely effects on the health of the river if the project is built? Consider the likely water quality/habitat impacts from a proposed construction project at our study site (Rotary Park). How would YOUR proposal affect water quality/habitat?
2
Clearing (removing trees/shrubs) and grading of the construction site will result in soil erosion, leading to increased turbidity and total solids.
3
Soil naturally contains nitrates/phosphates. When soil/sediments wash into the river this adds to nitrate/phosphate levels in the water and can result in increased algal growth. Too much algae can result in low DO levels as they die and decompose. BOD increases.
4
Loss of shade (from removal of streamside trees & shrubs) will result in increased water temps & lower DO levels.
5
The Cedar River?! The finished Project… Just Beautiful!
6
Oil & gas and toxic metals (from cars) from parking lots will pollute water through runoff. Once the Apartments are built…
7
Phosphate & nitrate levels will increase due to use of fertilizers on grass/landscaping, resulting in increased algal growth & lower DO.
8
Pesticides & herbicides used on grass/landscaping could enter river through runoff and harm aquatic plants and BMIs.
