History Derry was built on the Foyle due to access to the sea which was good for trade. In the siege of Derry 1810, Derry was run by the Protestants but besieged by the catholic army. So when royal navy ships came via the river to provide food, there was no point in besieging the city. Later on in history, the same groups of people were fighting each other for their beliefs The two communities were separated by the Foyle. Finally, there was a peace agreement and they built the peace bridge.
