Generating Reports Gerald Bergtrom, Ph.D. Learning Technology Center University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee October 2005 Edited by Tanya Joosten, Alan Aycock, Susan Gifford
2
Important Notes: Reports are generated from linked session (.tpz) and Participant List (.tpp) files. the.tpz file must be in the Sessions folder and the.tpp file must be on the computer you will use to view, maintain and report data. Therefore, save all.tpp files as they get updated. Reports can be generated from individual sessions or from merged session data. Merged session data may be useful for generating reports. After a merge, the original unmerged files are still there!
3
To generate a report, click again on Tools, then Turning Reports.
4
Select Generate Reports (the default); then click Next.
5
In the Report Wizard window, highlight the session file for which you want generate a report (in this case, we have chosen the merged file) and click Next.
6
These are just some of the reports that TurningPoint can generate (use the scroll bar at the left to see more). We’ll look at a few. Highlight the report type you want and then click Generate Report. In this case it’s Results by Question.
7
The report appears! It is in Excel tm format. When you save it, it will be an.xls file. This report tells you what fraction of your class chose which options to your questions.
8
When you have examined and/or saved any report, just exit Excel tm. You will be returned to the Report Wizard window.
9
Now, let’s highlight the Demographic Comparison report… And click Generate Report again.
10
Here is the lower (more interesting??!!) part of the report we just generated… This report cross-tabulates data on e.g., gender with chosen profession. It aggregates data slicing results. Exit this report (close Excel tm …)
11
Finally, let’s highlight Results by Participants… And click Generate Report again
12
This is another Excel tm file. It shows responses by participant. Answer options that you indicated as correct appear with a ‘c’. Close this file.
13
When you are done viewing/saving reports, click Finish…
14
You are returned to your current slide presentation.
15
Things to note when generating reports with merged session data(.tpz) files…
16
While they are correct, Report outputs from merged.tpz files are not in grade book form (see background). Responses from different sessions are in sequential blocks & are not gathered in rows by student. Thus aggregate data can be hard to manipulate. If students are added or deleted from an initial Participant List due to adds and drops, cutting/pasting response blocks can get tricky.
