What is the biographical approach to Literature? Analyzing an author’s life to better understand the influences it may have had on their writing style.

Cultural background, heritage, and traditions: For example: A writer who grew up in a Mexican-American community in Los Angeles could show the the problems and pleasures of Mexican- American teenagers growing up in a similar community with special Insight.

Attitudes and Beliefs: For example: Martin Luther King Jr. had very strong beliefs in racial equality between “ African- American ” and “ White ” citizens. He also favored peace and the use of non- violence to raise awareness. These beliefs can be heard in his public speeches.

Writer’s Experience: For example: Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) was a riverboat pilot. When he describes life on the Mississippi River in his novels, you know he is speaking from experience.
