“One More Friend”
2
captured If you have captured something, you have caught it and are not letting it go.
3
captured The lion captured the tiny mouse with its huge paw. I once captured a butterfly and then let it go after looking at it. Would you want to capture and observe a spider or a turtle? Why?
4
captured Tell about a story you have read or listened to in which a character was captured. Pretend you are trying to capture a big bug. Show how you would do it. Has anything ever captured your attention so that you didn’t want to do anything else? Tell about it.
5
mercy If you show kindness or forgiveness to someone who has done something wrong, you show mercy.
6
mercy The terrified mouse begged the lion for mercy. If you had been the lion, would you have shown mercy, or would you have eaten the mouse?
7
mercy Think about a time when someone showed you mercy after you did something you shouldn’t have. What did that person say to you to show you mercy? How did you feel afterward? Tell about a time you would show another person mercy.
8
struggling If you are struggling, you are making a great effort with your body or mind to do something.
9
struggling The mouse found the King of Beasts struggling to free himself from the hunters’ tangled net. I’d be struggling if I had to tie my shoes with one hand. Would you struggle more to write your name with your eyes closed or to make your bed using only one hand?
10
struggling If you saw a friend struggling to open box, what would you do? How might you look and act if you were struggling to carry a very heavy box across the room? What is the best thing to do if you are struggling with your homework?
11
compatible When people or animals are compatible, they are able to be together or get along with each other.
12
compatible Ant, Frog, Chick, Hen, Duck, Cat, Dog and Lamb were happy and compatible in the hammock. My friends and I are compatible and do many things together. Are you more compatible with children your own age or with adults?
13
compatible Suppose a new family with a child your age moves in next door. How can you learn if the two of you are compatible? How might a group of children behave if they are NOT compatible? In what ways are you and your best friend compatible?
14
amiable Someone who is amiable is good-natured and friendly.
15
amiable Ant is an amiable character who happily invites all the animals passing by to join her in the hammock. Is it more fun to be around someone who is amiable or someone who is not? Why?
16
amiable Name a storybook character who is amiable and one who is not. Give a reason for each choice. Is it more fun to be around someone who is amiable than someone who is not? Why? What is a good way to show that you are an amiable person?
17
relax When you relax, you are not uneasy or upset about anything. You spend time resting or doing things for fun.
18
relax All the animals were able to relax in the hammock in Cow’s backyard. I like to relax by sitting on my porch swing and reading. Would you rather relax on your porch or at the beach?
19
