3. What are metrics? Metrics is the unit used in science everywhere. It is based on the prefixes and 10’s No matter what the base word the prefix keeps same value of 10.

4. The Prefixes Apply to all forms of measurement Kilo- 1,000 of base word Centi- 1/100 (100 th ) of base word Milli- 1/1000 (1000 th ) of base word Micro- 1x10 -6 of base word

5. Metrics in Length The base word or unit for length is meters. 6. Examples 1. C enti + meter = centimeter Centi = 1/100 of (100th of) centimeter= 1/100 of a meter =.01m 2. Kilo + meter= kilometer Kilo = 1000 of kilometer= 1000 of meters= 1000m

7. Conversions Taking an amount and converting it to different units. How many centimeters are in 1 meter? Use factor label –1–1–1–1 meter x 100 centimeters =100 centimeter 1meter

8. Conversions How many centimeters are in 1 meter? –Use moving the decimal. 1 meter → centimeters = 1.00 with decimal moved 2 places to the right So, 1 meter = 100 centimeters
