General Adult Psychiatry Patient with Schizophrenia Lives alone – no family support Rarely leaves flat – too scared to go out Has diabetes, high cholesterol, smokes cigarettes Poor diet, no exercise, no interests Stigma from neighbours – 6 years was admitted to hospital and police and ambulance were involved

General Adult Psychiatry How common is Schizophrenia? How common is this picture? Which professionals might this individual need to support, treat, assess him/her in the community? How can we coordinate this?

As an IP-Educator occasions when 2 or more professionals learn from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care. (Barr 2002). Fits with ethos of mental health work

As an IP-Educator 1. Students meet with patients in their own homes 2. Students meet with the professionals involved in the patients care 3. Analysis of care given and solutions generated 4. Feedback to students/professional group

IPE Challenge for all services Future of health and social care will be Interprofessional vs uniprofessional Community based vs hospital/care settings The best care for individuals in the best place for the individual, by the most appropriate professionals And training needs to match these values - so we need more not less IPE
