Co-ordinates & Translations
2
The objective of this lesson is: To plot a shape and translate it for a given rule. To work out the translation from its original position to a new position. To give the coordinates of a given shape after a translation without drawing the translation.

Translations 1. Translate A Move A 4 squares forward then 3 squares up. 1 2. Translate A Move A 7 squares backward then 6 squares down. 2

Translations 3. Translate A Move A 2 squares forward then 6 squares down. 4. Translate A Move A 6 squares backward then 2 squares up. 4 3

Translations In the diagram above the shape labelled 1 can be obtained by a translation. Give the translation in the form Number of squares forward. Number of squares down. Translation 1234567 x 1 1 2 3 4 y 0 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 A 2 3 4 1 2 2 7

Translations In the diagram above the shape labelled 2 can be obtained by a translation. Give the translation in the form Number of squares back. Number of squares down. Translation 1234567 x 1 1 2 3 4 y 0 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 A 2 3 4 1 2 2 5
7
Translations T Translate the shape T using What are the new coordinates of the triangle? How can you work them out without drawing a grid or the shape?
8
Translations Translate the shape T using Just add 8 to the x coordinate and take 6 from the y coordinate. How to work out the coordinates without drawing a grid or the shape? Explain in your exercise book how to get from the left hand coordinate to the right hand coordinate.
9
Plenary You should be able to give the coordinates of a given shape after a translation without drawing the translation. You should be able to plot a shape and translate it. You should be able to look at two shapes and work out the translation required to get from one to the other.
