THE ORIGINS OF RAP Rap was born as part of a bigger cultural movement called "hip hop“. It was born in the United States of America in the late sixties. Rap mainly consists in talking according to a certain rhythm. This vocal technique is performed by an MC (freestyler), while the DJ supports the freestylers. The four elements of hip hop culture are writing (graffiti), breakdancing, rapping or MCing and DJing. This culture was born in the Afro-American community and Latin Americans in New York in the early seventies, as an adaptation of the American DJ style, a style of Jamaican reggae considered the main precursor of this kind.

GOOD REPUTATION Rap singers are not just black gangsters with baggy pants, but also young people who want to denounce the ugly reality of their suburbs and violence to poor and weak people. Their aim is sending positive messages of love and hope.

WHAT DO WE THINK ABOUT IT? All rap singers have in common the need to talk about their world, telling stories of everyday life and express the anger caused by degraded realities through the powerful medium of music.
