Course Selection Process Selection Forms were given to students Friday, February 14 th in their Social Studies classes. Course Placement: 8 th graders are placed into core courses based on teacher recommendations, grades, ISAT and Lexile scores, and placement test scores. Counselors analyze each component to make the best placement. Electives: rank electives in order and write them on the lines # 1-4 with your child, please consider and view all options on the back side of the course selection sheet. Turn in selection forms to Social Studies teachers by Wednesday, February 25 th * *If form is not turned in, MHS will choose the electives!

MHS GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS 28 credits to graduate English (4) Math (3) Science (3) Social Sciences (2) Sophomore Block (1) (Writing, Drivers Ed., and Career Exploration) Technology (1) Physical Education (½ per semester) Health (½ ) A student can earn 8 credits in 1 year

4 YEAR COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS English (4) Math (3) – 4 years strongly recommended Science (3) Social Studies (3) Two years of Foreign Language or Two years of Fine Arts – Music, Art Some colleges REQUIRE foreign language for admission – see Public Illinois Universities in 8 th grade packet. Other Factors for College Admission: G.P.A (Class Rank), ACT scores, & activity involvement/volunteer experience.

GRADE WEIGHTS Weighted courses are advanced courses that are designed to be academically challenging. Weighted grades will be given to students receiving an A, B, or C only. Students receiving a D will not receive a weighted grade. Students desiring a rigorous program of study should take the courses listed in the Course Guide or noted with asterisk * on the selection sheet. ENGLISH DEPARTMENT English 9 or English 9 Honors ▫Honors Requirements: Recommendation from teacher and meets EXPLORE English and Reading 8 th grade Benchmark scores (English – 13, Reading – 16). Also looked to see if student had A’s in 8 th grade Language Arts, preferably exceed ISAT scores, and Lexile over 1200. College & Career Preparation or Advanced CCP ▫Advanced: Meet EXPLORE English and Reading 9 th grade Benchmark scores(English – 14, Reading – 17). Electives: Mythology (½) & Creative Writing(½)

MATH DEPARTMENT Geometry –> Alg 2H-> Trig/PreCalc -> AP Calc *Requirement: Meet EXPLORE 9 th grade benchmark scores in Math (18) and A’s in 8 th grade Algebra. Advanced Algebra 1 -> Geometry -> Algebra 2H - > Trig/PreCalc - > AP Calc *Requirement: Algebra 1 8 th grade year plus meet EXPLORE 8 th grade benchmark score in Math (17). Algebra 1->Geometry or Informal Geometry->Alg 2 or Algebra 2H-> Trig/PreCalc or Discrete Mathematics Pre-Algebra-> Algebra 1 –> Geometry or Informal Geometry –>Algebra 2 or Algebra 2H * Algebra skills are very important for the ACT and higher math classes at MHS and in college. If you child is placed in Advanced Algebra it is meant to help them succeed and improve Algebra skills.

MATH DEPARTMENT Calculator Requirement for Manteno High School Math Students Manteno High School requires the use of a TI-84 Plus or TI-84 Plus Silver Edition graphing calculator for the following classes: Algebra I, Informal Geometry, Geometry, Algebra II, Algebra II Honors, Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus. The TI-84 Plus family is allowed for use on the ACT, PSAT, the SAT Reasoning Test, SAT Subject Tests and Math Level 1 and 2 Tests, AP Chemistry exam, AP Physics exam, and AP Calculus exam. Estimated Cost: approximately $110.00 The TI-84 Plus can be found at most stores that carry school supplies, including Target and Wal-Mart.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Biology 1B OR Biology 1A All freshman take one of these science courses. They may be able to take multiple science classes after their freshman year.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & HEALTH Physical Education (1 semester) Health (1 semester) The MMS uniform can be used for MHS Physical Education class. If you are in need of a new uniform it will be available for purchase at the beginning of your PE semester, the cost is $30.

SOCIAL SCIENCES World History Cultural Geography ▫*Elective credits NOT required for graduation. ▫Graduation Requirements: U.S History (1) Junior year, Civics (.5) and Economics (.5) Senior year

SPANISH DEPARTMENT Spanish I ▫Rigorous course load – studying outside of school will be necessary. ▫Some four-year colleges and universities require 2 years of a foreign language, and may recommend 3 or 4.

Topics including: Basic Design, Drawing/Black & White Painting/Color Clay Plaster Wire Collage Printmaking *This class counts as a fine art class for colleges.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT Concert Band (1 credit) Fresh./Soph. Chorus(1 credit) *Both of these classes counts as Fine Arts credit for college.
