Tuesday 11/18: Today: go over DBQ, get ready for Thursday Due Wed 11/19: C 14 ques/chart/terms Wed: Quiz C 14 TH 11/20: In class DBQ (75 points) F 11/21: Guest Speaker (Dr. Richard Leventhal)

DBQ: Han and Roman attitudes toward technology… Thesis: MUST address “attitudes towards technology”… not about effects of technology, sources of technology or types of technology Addresses all documents: MUST group ALL documents Supports thesis with evidence from the documents: Avoid listing or summarizing the documents Do NOT list documents (Doc 1, 2 and 3 say…..) USE the content of the documents as evidence for your argument Evidence must come from EACH document (can not group them) Cite them in an in text citation style (Doc3). Analyze for Point of View: most problematic Analyze by grouping in three ways: Not necessarily similarities or differences Each group must describe a UNIQUE quality Groups must relate back to the thesis which relates back to the prompt There is no such thing as a “neutral” group (“unaffected or not interested”?) Additional document: Must also ask and EXPLAIN why you want it to help you answer THIS question Don’t ask for a document that you already have

Additional document: Must also ask and EXPLAIN why you want it to help you answer THIS question Don’t ask for a document that you already have YOU MUST explain that the document you are requesting will fill in a VOID that the documents that the documents provided to you HAS Request should do TWO things (according to Bill Strickland): 1. give a plausible reason WHY a particular document would help answer the question AND 2. explicitly explain HOW that document is DIFFERENT from the other documents.

Because the document is a government sponsored history of China, they want to ensure that history remembers the Han as great thinkers and innovators (Doc 4). Frontinus praises the invention of aqueducts. He is a water commissioner so he would support aqueducts because it shows the influence of his job (Doc 8). Cicero, an upper class Roman political leader, once wrote that technology is needed for gentlemen because they ‘shouldn’t spend their time in vulgar occupations.” As an upper class man, Cicero was not used to living a life where work was hard and vulgar, he was probably not used to working at all (Doc 5). Cicero was an upper class citizen. He did not value tools and technology because he did not labor with them often, if at all (Doc 5). The Roman general Frontinus had a persuasive agenda when writing this document because he wanted everyone to be pleased with the efficiency of the aqueducts since he was the water commissioner of Rome (Doc 8). The upper class Roman leader Cicero asserts that crafts and workshops are not pursuits suitable for a gentleman. However, Cicero’s position as a political leader blinds him, for he has never taken up a tool for himself (Doc 5). Due to the fact that “The History of the Early Han Dynasty” is a government sponsored history, it can be assumed that the document was written for the purpose of glorifying the government's achievements and appealing to the people of the Han (Doc 4).

Because this document comes from an upper class Roman political leader who is not often in a workshop environment, it may be hard for him to see how new tools and techniques are helping society prosper (Doc 5). According to document 3, in a passage of an upper class Han philosopher, over time improvements in old technology help society directly prosper. Because he is a philosopher, his point of view on the subject is a broad outlook on the benefits of improvements on society. As a part of the government, Han Guan sees the monopolies from within and sees the negative impact of the controlled technology on peasant society (Doc 2). But this document was written by an upper class philosopher so a great mind to others may appear as only an average mind to him (Doc 7). The government wants their history to say good things about its rule, so the people will trust it. By lauding the invention of an appointed governor, the government can also be credited for appointing such a good man (Doc 4). Frontius wrote Document 8 during the first century CE in a way that advertises the vast improvements in the Roman water system because he is the water commissioner for Rome and wants to reflect his efforts as being successful.

I would have liked an additional document from the perspective of a member of the lower class because a lot of these documents were from government officials and high ranking individuals who likely did not experience these negative effects of technology. A peasant perspective would allow us to see how they felt, positively or negatively, about using new technology. A document about the opinions of the lower classes would be necessary to determine if these tools and techniques were truly beneficial to all. I would need this to help answer the question since all of the documents offered were from the upper class. QUESTIONS?
