Antimicrobial Activity Of Bagumbong (Alpinia elegans) Rhizome Extract Against Streptococcus Pneumoniae
2
Introduction Streptococcus pneumoniae, or pneumococcus, is a Gram-positive, alpha-hemolytic, facultative anaerobic member of the genus Streptococcus. A significant human pathogenic bacterium, S. pneumoniae was recognized as a major cause of pneumonia in the late 19th century, and is the subject of many humoral immunity studies. Bagumbong (Alpinia elegans) is a stout herbaceous plant growing to a height of 2 to 4 meters, with stout rootstocks. The species is widely distributed in the country. The rhizomes and leaves are recorded to be medicinal and has antimicrobial property as well.Bagumbong rhizome extract has been used to treat diseases caused by microbes. This study aims to identify the antimicrobial activity of Bagumbong rhizome extract against Streptococcus pneumoniae.
3
Problem This study aims to address the following question:
What is the effect of Bagumbong rhizome extract to Streptococcus pneumoniae as to A. zone of inhibitions b. rate of mortality of S. pneumoniae in 6 hours,12 hours, and 24 hours. 2 . Is there a significant difference on the activity of S. pneumonia on different samples when applied by bagumbong rhizome extract.
4
Hypothesis Null hypothesis
There is no significant difference in the activity of Streptococcus pneumoniae and the amount of a Bagumbong rhizome extract applied.
5
Scope and Limitations This study will focus and is limited on the antimicrobial activity of Bagumbong rhizome extract against the sample of S. pneumoniae
