3. Example practice Fareport first identified the Citizenship activities that engaged and motivated the learners to buy in to Citizenship It was also important to have 100% Senior Management support to ensure the programmes success. Having facts and figures that supported achievement and progression helped. But with the every large threat of Ofsted, linking the programme with ECM was a great seller.

4. Be Healthy The well-being programme consists of a series of outside speakers on a range of subjects. The subject and style of speaker is decided at the monthly learner forums. The learner evaluations from previous sessions inform the forum Citizenship angle is important and includes looking at the wider picture e.g. learners investigating the local and national cost of treating smoking related illnesss, as well as the personal cost to ones own health. Becoming informed, can and should inspire the learner to make positive change to not only their live, but the community around them.

5. Stay Safe By encouraging the learners to read the daily News Papers during morning announcements, learners have identified what matters to them and been motivated to get things changed. Last July the learners noticed that the night bus service had been stopped. The learners campaigned to get the service back by contacting the learners at the local colleges, the police, local councilors, the bus company and the media. The learners highlighted the safety issues that having no night bus raised.

6. Enjoy and Achieve The learners enjoy celebrating their success. Fareport help to reward learners success by accrediting their Citizenship work with Key Skill and Essential Skill qualifications. Learners plan a celebration event which gives the opportunity to share this success. Currently the learners are planning a Halloween celebration event. During the planning of this event, learners have the opportunity to research all aspects of Halloween e.g. the history and the social problem that trick or treat can cause. Win-Win situation as this brings in Citizenship and ECM enjoy and achieve

7. Make a Positive Contribution Making a positive contribution can be in many forms, learners have participated in the staff interview process, a very successful learner forum but for the wider community a joint project with the local council Learners planned and organised an intergenerational/community gardening project with the local council. The project won a national award at last years Make a Difference Day national awards. The project has now grown and includes room make overs. Learners benefit from learning new practical skills, evidence is used for key/essential skills and barriers are broken down between the elderly and the young. Community spirit grows when the community areas are made over. In turn the young people are more employable with increased skills/qualifications and confidence

8. Achieve Economic Well-being The citizenship process builds a culture of participation which in turn inspires and motivates the young people to want to achieve. By rewarding and recognising success both formally and informally, it leaves the young person well on their way to personal and community effectiveness Learners recently through the learner forum, decided to work together to plan a Christmas trip. Using their skills they designed a business plan to raise the money. The forum had identified the issue that some learners lived independently and would not be able to pay for the trip themselves. To ensure E&D was respected they planned to raise 100% of the trip money. The learners used their problem solving skills to plan a way of raising the funds. The looked at investing some of the profit from their tuck shop to purchase resources to undertake a staff car wash. This project informed the learners with the skill of planning and budgeting.
