5.  Writing is essential to thinking, learning and growth. It promotes higher level thinking skills and helps to clarify. The more fluent the writer, the more successfully one can complete academically rigorous assignments.  Inquiry -focuses on the student as the learner, developing skillful, open-ended questioning skills. Students will be able to recognize different levels of questioning

6.  Collaboration - Students internalize what they have studied and learned if they are able to collaborate with others and make connections.  Organization – Planner to notes important dates (tests, quizzes, project, etc…), Binder to keep assignments neatly organized, and Cornell notes – student may take notes on Cornell notepaper, but unless the process is completed it is not Cornell.

7.  Reading – is key to understanding in all content areas. Keeping reading as a focus in AVID develops reading comprehension, awareness of the different reasons for reading, and understanding of the different structures of texts.

9. Cornell note taking stimulates critical thinking skills. Note taking helps students remember what is said in class. Cornell notes help students organize and process data and information. Cornell notes helps students recall by getting them to process their notes 3 times.
