WHAT IF… Numbers are non-stop and never ending. One could say that infinity could be the last number but infinity isn’t a number but rather an idea. Well, what would happen if numbers never existed? This process of taking something out of a series of events and seeing the changes is called the butterfly effect. The effects could range from an event happening at a different setting to an entirely different timeline. This helps us realize how much of an impact the item we are removing has on the world.

RELATED THINGS Lets think about anything that involves numbers. Occupations, time, programming, currency, and math in general are all affected by numbers. Most of these things would definitely be different especially math. It’s a study based completely around numbers. It might not even exist if we didn’t have them.

THE EFFECTS Seeing as that programming involves numbers, it would have a great effect on technology. While we may improvise with something else for example shapes, but who knows? Only a timeline lacking numbers would tell. Things that are more than one would be hard to explain. Take a look to the two cute apples to the right. What would you call these if you couldn’t use any type of number? The word double is technically the word two in disguise so that won’t work. You could say apples, but we know that ‘s’ at the end of a word usually makes it plural, meaning more than one. One is a number obviously.

THE EFFECTS CONT. I'm pretty sure every job includes numbers in one way or another. Even a house maid needs to know the address of the house she needs to clean, and a gardener needs to know how many plants to buy. Jobs would be different to measure without numbers. Without numbers we can’t measure. If we can’t measure, we can’t manage anything. This is because you can only manage what you can measure.

THE EFFECTS CONT. PT2 An extremely important one is time. How would we keep track of it? We wouldn’t have seconds minutes, hours, days, etc. The only thing we would be able to tell would be when it was day or night by seeing the sun and the moon. And finally math. Like I said earlier, math is based on numbers so the majority of it wouldn’t really exist as we know it today. It might exist as something else, but I doubt it will be less complicated or as convenient.

IMPACT ON US AND SOCIETY The change that would most likely impact us the most would probably be the lack of ANY technology. That means anything that includes programming in any way will not exist. So no computers, laptops, phones, portable games, consoles or any of the technology that we take for granted and make life as we know it today. Most likely society would be the most effected from the lack of currency. There would be no stores because you couldn’t “buy” anything. You would grow your own food and create your other necessities. Stock exchanges such as Wall Street, FTSE, Shanghai, and Nikkei 225 will not be in existence because of the lack of numbers and currency. Therefore, the countries will not be able to trade among each other.
