The Story of “Lions, Tigers and Bears…Oh My!!!” Jonah’s kindergarten class was taking a field trip to the zoo. He was so excited! When he finally got to the zoo, he ran off the bus and straight to the monkey cage. He had always wanted a monkey for a pet, so he jiggled the cage open to take a monkey home with him. Oh no! The monkey got away and started unlocking ALL of the animals’ cages! What is he going to do? You have to help him! In order to help Jonah put all of the animals back in their homes, you must correctly answer these math problems. Hurry! They are getting away! There goes an elephant heading to the mall… Home Page

Game Directions oThe goal of the game is to help Jonah put all of the animals back in their cages. oTo play the game you have to correctly answer the math problems. Correct answers will allow you to roll the dice. The number you roll is the number of spaces you get to move your game piece forward on the game board. If you answer the question incorrectly, you lose your chance to roll the dice and your game piece must remain on the same spot. oTo win the game you have to be the first person to put all of the animals back in their cages. To do this, you have to be the first person to cross the finish line on the game board. Return

Game Preparation Game board: Print out slide 6, cut off the edges, then tape together to create the game board. You might consider laminating the board, or mounting in onto a poster board so that it more durable. Game Pieces: Print out slide 5 and cut out the game pieces. You can laminate each animal, or glue it to poster or cardstock so that it is sturdy. Die: You will need one die for students to roll after they have answered a question correctly. Home Page

Educational Objectives Audience Kindergarten students in Mathematics Subject Area Objective: Students will be able to… Recognize, name, draw, and construct basic geometric shapes [circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval (ellipse), and diamonds (rhombus)]. Compares two geometric shapes to determine relationship (larger than, smaller than, same shape as, and same size as). Names and identifies coins (penny, nickel, dime, and quarter) and dollar bills. Compares and describes lengths (longer than, longest, shorter than, shortest, and same length as). Identifies a number between two given numbers, and a number before and after a number in numerals (0 through 10) or words (zero through ten). Recognizes and selects the numerals (0 through 10) and number words to name the number of elements in a set Home Page

Educational Objectives Identify even and odd numbers. Identify and write the missing number in a sequence. Continues simple patterns (color, shape, size, sound, texture, seasons, and events). Models, acts out, or uses pictures to solve simple problems. Explores one-step word problems related to all appropriate kindergarten objectives. Combines and separates sets of objects by a given characteristic (size, shape, color, and quantity) as readiness for the operations of addition and subtraction. Counts the number of elements in a set and writes the corresponding numeral (0 through 10). Students will also be able to… Use technology to solve problems and make decisions with teacher guidance.
