RNP's Digital Video Working Group Applying Logistical Networking to Content Delivery

Collaboration Logistical Computing and Internetworking Laboratory University of Tennessee Dr. Micah Beck Laboratórios Associados de Vídeo Digital Universidade Federal da Paraíba Dr. Guido Lemos

RNP’s Digital Video Working Group Objective: build a CDN that supports the capture, recovery, and transmission of video data from both live and delayed sources.

Main Design Characteristics Expandable Block-view of data Cascading caches –storage at RNP PoPs Supports secure transfers Multiple sources (replication) Centralized redirection

D-VoD Server The CDN’s workhorse - server and proxy UDP Control RTSP/RTP HTTP Cache L-Bone File UDP HTTP SourceDestination RTSP/RTP OtherIBP

The D-VoD Service Online Catalog Online Catalog DVoD server 1 1 2 2 3 3 DVoD server DVoD server Redirector IBP

Possible Data Paths D-VoDf D-VoDi IBP D-VoDfD-VoDiD-VoDfD-VoDi D-VoDf : source D-VoDi : intermediary

Content Publication Data recovery based on URL –redirector address –content ID »publisher number »ascension number »encrypted/clear »live/delayed »format –protocols –sources

Content Publication Every object published must have an associated URL Supports batch publication (requires data file) For delayed transmission, a publisher can store the data on local disk, in IBP depots, or both

Data Management Plenty of space (lors_upload) Replication and replication threshold (lors_augment) exNode maintenance (lors_trim) Allocation maintenance (lors_refresh) GAINSOBSTACLES

Data Management More IBP depots in the RNP = more reliable service Bundled with D-VoDi deployments (open) Bundled with D-VoDf installations (restricted) L-Bone contributors in Brazil/S. America

Future Work Better use of Logistical Networking Develop relationship between replication and popularity/demand Apply current caching policies to IBP allocations Allow publishers to provide direct access to exNodes
