2. History -Lucius Tarquinius Superbus -7th and final king in Rome’s monarchy period -a tyrant known for brutally having his enemies executed -also called Tarquin the Proud

3. Story of his reign -came from an Etruscan family -married to Tullia, the daughter of the 6th king of Rome, Servius Tullius - She encouraged him to murder Servius in order to gain the throne

4. Story cont. -at time of his ascension, Rome had 35,000 inhabitants, territory 800 km -Superbus expanded the power of the city by building Capitoline Temple and Cloaca Maxima, which is Rome’s sewer system -The Senate began to fulfill its function by advising Superbus, who ignored them.

7. History -Actual treaty exists between Superbus and the neighboring settlement of Gabii and was preserved until AD 14. Augustus mentions it in passing in several of his edicts.
