Internalization process by which a norm becomes a part of an individuals personality EX: When you go to the movies you sit in a chair not the floor.

Sanctions rewards or punishments used to enforce conformity to norms EX: jail or award of honor

Positive Sanctions reward for a particular behavior EX: Good grades, raise for good worker, cheers for a teammate, badges or awards.

Negative Sanctions Punishment or threat used to enforce conformity EX: Parking ticket or getting car towed in “No Parking Zone”, Fines, Imprisionment

Formal Sanctions rewards or punishments given by a formal organization. EX: School, business or government

Informal Sanctions Spontaneous expression of approval or disapproval given by individual or group EX: Compliments, smiles, gifts Frowns, gossip, insults
