2 Review of Statistics on Lawyer Relationships  Lawyers have higher divorce rates than Architects, Engineers, CEOs, Pharmacists, and Doctors  Women lawyers are 50% more likely to go through divorce than their male counterparts  Lawyers are less happy with their lives than many other professions, including clergymen, architects, teachers, and engineers.

3 Managing Both Your Work and Private Life  What are your goals or aspirations for work and relationships? Are you meeting these goals?  Why do professionals often have problems in personal relationships while moving on the fast track to get ahead at work?  Do you feel compelled to prioritize work over home life? Why?

4 Creating Healthy Boundaries for Successful Relationships  Learning how to communicate honestly about feelings  Developing trust as a result of honest communication  Avoiding defensiveness  Examples of honest communication

5 Do Lawyers Have Inherent Intimacy Problems?  Lawyers are trained to deal in absolutes; things are black and white, right and wrong  Lawyers are trained to be adversarial; compromise and emotion are deemed to be signs of weakness  How well do these traits work in healthy relationships?

6 Common Avoidance Tactics  Working Late  Staying busy even when you are home  Getting absorbed in electronics  Obsession with sports or exercise  Drinking to avoid conversation or confrontation

7 How Counseling or Coaching Can Help  Counseling looks at internal dysfunction, and deals with changing yourself or your responses in order to address problems  Counseling should be utilized for addictive behavior or serious psychological disorders  Coaching involves encouraging positive action  Coaching can help to change negative outlooks and help overcome external adversities
