Dividing Fractions

When dividing fractions, rewrite the problem as a multiplication.
Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction. A reciprocal is also called a multiplicative inverse. A number times its reciprocal equals 1.

Example #1: Multiply by the reciprocal. Cancel. Multiply across,

Example #2: A whole number can be written as a fraction over 1.

Example #3: Change mixed numbers to improper fractions.
Multiply the numerator by the reciprocal of the denominator. 1 1 2 Cancel. Multiply across, then simplify.

Example #6: A box of Yummy Crunchers cereal contains 15 ⅗ ounces of cereal. If a bowl holds 2 ⅖ ounces of cereal, how many bowls of Yummy Crunchers are in the box? Each box of Yummy Crunchers contains 6 ½ bowls of cereal.
