Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers Objective: Learn to divide fractions and mixed numbers.
2
Reciprocals: 1. Reciprocal means to “flip” the fraction. 2. You put the numerator in the denominator’s place and the denominator in the numerator’s place. Example of Reciprocals: 1) Find the reciprocal of 4 = 11 11 4 2) Find the reciprocal of 3 = 8 3) Find the reciprocal of 1 4
3
Steps for dividing fractions: Example: 5 ÷ 2 6 3 5 × 3 6 2 15 = 12 1 3 1 1 12 = 4 1. When dividing fractions you have to find the reciprocal of the second fraction. 2. Then you change the division sign to a multiplication sign. 3. Multiply normally. 4. Convert any improper fractions to mixed numbers. 5. Simplify.
4
Examples: 1) 3 ÷ 12 7 21 2) 5 ÷ 1 7 3) 7 ÷ 1 8 6
5
When dividing Mixed Numbers: 1)Re write the mixed numbers as improper fractions. 2)Find the reciprocal of the second fraction. 3)Change the ÷ sign to a × sign. 4)Multiply normally. 5)Convert the improper fraction back to a mixed number. 6)Simplify. Example: 5 3 ÷ 3 2 4 3
