William Glasser- Biography -Born in Cleveland Ohio- 1925 -Received B.S. in chemical engineering at Case Western Reserve University(1945) and M.A. in clinical psychology (1948) -Developed Reality and Choice Theory +Focus on personal choice, responsibility and transformation. +Considered controversial by mainstream psychologists. +Tried to avoid classifying psychiatric syndromes, and prescribing medication. -Applied theories to education, management, and marriage

Reality Therapy What is Reality Theory? Operates under 5 basic psychological needs: -Power -Love and Belonging -Freedom -Fun -Survival At all times we are operating to meet these needs.

Reality Therapy What if we are not meeting our psychological needs? Reality Therapists would ask three basic questions. -What do you want? -What are you doing to get what you want? -Is it working?

Workable Plan -A therapist would help client craft a workable plan -Focus on present; avoid discussing past -Plan must be easily implemented. In one’s control. -Reality Therapy empowers the client by emphasizing the power of doing what is in your control to do. -Ultimately, a philosophy built upon hope and rendering solutions.

-How does Reality Therapy relate to education? -Teachers are responsible to make education relevant and interesting. -Responsible for establishing rapport with students. -Students are responsible to show up to class, study and learn. -School is a proving ground for life.
