1 MYP SERVICE AS ACTION

2 What is Service as Action? “IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment” IB Principles to Practice -Responsible action -Sustained inquiry -Critical reflection -Connects IB Learner Profile attributes to the community -Connects classroom learning to community encounters -Transferable knowledge -21 st century learners – “real world” skills -Cornerstone of being an IB student and global citizen

3 Why do students have to do SA? It benefits other people in the school, local and international community It helps them to learn about themselves It develops their interpersonal and leadership skills It allows them to discover new talents, skills and interests It helps them to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses It prepares them for the demands of Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) in IBDP It prepares them for the demands of Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) in IBDP It looks really good on their CV

5 Learning Outcomes Increase awareness of their strengths and areas for growth Undertake challenges that develop new skills Discuss, evaluate and plan student-initiated activities Show perseverance and commitment Work collaboratively with others Engage with locally and globally significant challenges Consider the ethical implications of their actions

6 UTS MYP REQUIREMENTS Minimum of 1 project per student per year – THIS MUST BE A MEANINGFUL PROJECT AND LONG TERM 6+ WEEKS Projects should aim to achieve 2 or more of the IB Service learning outcomes Can be group (no more than 6) OR individual

7 What is “meaningful” service? Understanding underlying issues in the community and seeing a need for service Meaningful service = interaction by building links with individuals or in the student’s communities Assessing needs of the communities Finding solutions to problems

8 Types of Projects you might do Running a lunchtime club or ECA Organising/running events or activities Advocating on behalf of a charity or cause Volunteering your time for a charity or cause

9 Examples of projects Lunchtime clubs – sports, debate, programming, language tutoring After school ECAs – sports coaching, drama, yoga, tutoring, teacher assistants Events – Earth Day, music concerts Awareness Campaigns – Breast cancer, Kiva micro loans, disease awareness, environmental campaigns, health campaigns, labour camps, special needs awareness Volunteering – animal shelters, hospitals, special needs schools Service – collection drives, PYP/KG help, team managers/reporters and photographers, peer mentors

10 SA Project Checklist QUESTIONS TO ASK: Am I providing a service to someone? Is my project meaningful? Is my project long term (6+ weeks) Am I learning new skills by doing this project?

11 Project Process 1.Speak to HR teacher/parent 2.Find a supervisor 3.Managebac proposal 4.Plan activity 5.Complete ‘action’ 6.Upload the evidence & reflections to Managebac

12 What should a good project look like? 2-3 weeks planning time, resources needed, facilities used, people to be spoken to etc. Well executed and documented activity (photos and/or videos the entire way through your project) 2-3 weeks reflection and evidence creation time

13 How is it graded? Unsatisfactory– SA project did not meet the requirements and as such will not be counted towards that student’s total number of projects for the year Satisfactory – SA project meets all the requirements

14 Awards Outstanding Projects Awards – going above and beyond Outstanding Contributions Awards – Awareness, Fundraising, Service
