2. Why should YOU be a Vessel Examiner? There are about 13 million registered recreational boats in the United States. Fewer than 1% receive a free Vessel Safety Check each year. Unsafe boats represent a real danger to recreational boaters. The United States Coast Guard is asking for your help in increasing the number of Vessel Safety Checks performed.

3. Why should YOU be a Vessel Examiner? Recent research shows the concept of the Vessel Safety Check program is popular. Our current VEs tell us—“if I ask boaters to let me do a VSC, they say yes.” More Vessel Examiners = More Vessel Safety Checks! But many current Vessel Examiners are “maxed out”—we can’t expect them to perform more VSCs than they do now. –We need more “feet on the docks.”

4. Why should YOU be a Vessel Examiner? New USCG “You’re In Command: Boat Responsibly” campaign will aggressively promote the VSC program. We must be ready to meet the demand.

5. Why should YOU be a Vessel Examiner? The U.S. Coast Guard needs you. –VSCs help keep unsafe boats off the water, and allow the USCG to devote more resources to its new marine homeland security duties.

6. Why should YOU be a Vessel Examiner? The Vessel Safety Check program is one of our best ways to recruit new members. –Face time with recreational boaters is a great opportunity to talk about our organization and stress the benefits you’ve gained from membership.

7. Why should YOU be a Vessel Examiner? You spent a lot of time becoming an expert on boating and boating safety—you might as well put that expertise to good use. Staying current on VSC requirements helps you stay current on your own knowledge of boating and boating safety. It’s fun to meet new boaters and see their boats!

8. Why should YOU be a Vessel Examiner? The training period is relatively quick and extremely informational. Maintaining VE status requires you to complete only 5 Vessel Safety Checks per year—probably less than three hours of volunteer service.
