1 What is it? What does it cause?
Plate Tectonics What is it? What does it cause?

2 Table of Contents Date Title Lesson # 8/26 Spatial Analysis 1 8/27
5 Themes of Geography 2 8/28 The 5 A’s 3 8/31 Geographer’s Tools 4 9/1 Internal Forces 5 1. Draw a line underneath wherever you left off yesterday. 2. Write the title “Internal Processes”

3 Internal Forces – processes that happen inside the earth that change the land
Example – volcanoes, earthquakes

4 Clip: 1. What are plates? 2. Explain plate tectonics.

5 Rodinia, the oldest supercontinent for which we have some record, formed during the middle Proterozoic (~ 1100 million years ago) with North America in the center, South America to the east, and Australia and Antarctica to the west.

6 Theory of Continental Drift
1. The earth was once a supercontinent called Pangaea. WRITE THE HEADLINE, RECORD 1-3 FOR YOUR INTRO

7 2. The continents slowly drifted apart over millions of years.
Jurrassic Period Cretaceous Period

8 3. The plates drifted and crashed into each other.
Tertiary Quartenary – 1.8 million years ago to present

9 1. Write Plate Tectonics Tasks in the center of your page. Number 1-9.
2. Turn to your CHAMPs section in the front of your notebook. Copy the Laptops CHAMPs chart as I go over it. When you are finished show an adult the chart and get it approved. Once your chart is approved you may get a laptop. You will need a partner as well. 3. Login = the letter S and your student ID, example s The password = student09 - Go to 4. Click 1st Six Weeks 5. Open the power point titled “Plate Tectonicsgood – 09 L.” 6. Complete all tasks and take the required notes.

10 This system is used to set up classroom procedures for each activity.
Directions: Turn to the front section of your notebook where your other CHAMPs charts are located. CHAMPs System This system is used to set up classroom procedures for each activity.

11 C - Conversation Can I talk? If yes to whom? How loud?
How will I know when to be silent?

12 Activity  LAPTOPS Conversation Yes, whisper, to help kids, be on task

13 H - Help If I need help what do I do? Where do I look?
Is it ok to help others when I am finished? What does that look like?

14 Activity  LAPTOPS Conversation Yes, whisper, to help kids, be on task
Orso, notebook, text, other kids

15 A - Activity What am I doing? What is the finished product?
What is step one?

16 Activity  LAPTOPS Conversation Yes, whisper, to help kids, be on task
Orso, notebook, text, other kids Activity Viewing websites, creating products

17 M - Movement Can I get out of my seat? If yes, how?

18 Activity  LAPTOPS Conversation Yes, whisper, to help kids, be on task
Orso, notebook, text, other kids Activity Viewing websites, creating products Movement Yes, get laptop when approved No, use hand signals after seated Participation

19 P – Participation What does it look when I’m doing it right?
What does it look like if its done wrong? Right Wrong

20 Activity  LAPTOPS Conversation Yes, whisper, to help kids, be on task
Orso, notebook, text, other kids Activity Viewing websites, creating products Movement Yes, get laptop when approved No, use hand signals after seated Participation Right = typing, writing, helping Wrong = anything other than what is assigned

21 Plate Tectonics In motion…
1. Task  Sketch a picture demonstrating the theory of plate tectonics.

22 Effects of Plate Tectonics
What happens as a result of plate tectonic theory? Directions: Record the notes on each effect of plate tectonics. Complete all tasks.

23 Effects of Plate Tectonics
RECORD THESE NOTES Effects of Plate Tectonics 2. Effect: Mountains – when plates COLLIDE the land is forced upward

24 3. Task – View the link in the headline
3. Task – View the link in the headline. Explain how the Himalayas were formed. Himalayas Forming

25 Effects of Plate Tectonics
RECORD THESE NOTES Effects of Plate Tectonics 4. Volcanoes – magma is forced upward when ocean plates collide with continental plates

26 Ring of Fire =

27 5. Ring of Fire - zone around the Pacific Ocean where 8 plates meet - tons of volcanoes and earthquakes RECORD THESE NOTES

28 Effects of Plate Tectonics
6. Earthquakes – as plates collide and rub together earthquakes occur Most recent quakes along San Andreas fault Earthquakes occurring right now Check out San Andreas fault RECORD THESE NOTES View each of link and use the information to answer the questions on the following slide.

29 Earthquake Questions 7. What causes earthquakes?
8. Where do most earthquakes occur? 9. What are some effects of earthquakes? RECORD THESE QUESTIONS AND ANSWER EACH ONE.
