Introduction Marine biologists are trained experts in marine life and use a variety of tools to advance our knowledge of marine life and conservation. In the future, marine biologists will be required to use more complex tools and collaborate globally with other marine biologists to solve problems in our oceans. As the population grows, the sea life will get less and less. Marine biologists will have to help conserve this life.

What do marine biologists do? A marine biologist studies, protects, or observes marine life ( swfsc.noaa.gov). Marine biologists can study population levels and migration patterns of marine animals. They study marine life and how it relates to its environment.

Where do marine biologists work? Some marine biologists work in labs or offices. Sometimes they work in libraries to study. Others work in lakes, oceans, bays, islands, etc. In the US, marine biologists can work in Alaska, Hawaii, Florida, California, anywhere along the east or west coast, and other places.

What other people do marine biologists work with? Marine biologists need to know how to work alone, but also with groups. They might have to work with professors, or teach other people. Marine biologists also may have to talk to the public. They have to communicate with other marine biologists.

What kind of education do marine biologists need? To be a marine biologist, you would need a bachelor’s degree in marine biology. Also a degree in biology or zoology would be efficient. In high school, the classes chemistry, math, biology, and technology. Marine biologists need strong research skills (careercruising).

What kind of equipment/technology do marine biologists use? Marine biologists use lots of things. They use computers, and computers with special programs. Some use lab equipment like electron microscopes to study marine organisms. They can use cameras and photographing equipment. Marine biologists that dive underwater to study animals use diving equipment and boats (careers.govt).

How do marine biologists effect humanity? Marine biologists are very important to society. We are dependent on oceans for water, food, materials, and more. Most of the food people eat comes from oceans or lakes. So marine biologists study this marine life so we know more about the ocean and what is in it, and how important it is.

Old to New In the future, marine biologists will be required to use more complex tools and collaborate globally with other marine biologists to solve problems in our oceans. The new job will still be called a marine biologist. It also might be called a marine conserver because marine life might start getting scarce as our population grows. They will have to save and conserve it.

New Schooling and Skills The marine conserver or marine biologist will still need a degree in marine biology. In the future, though, a person wanting to be a marine biologist/conserver might need an extra two years in college. They will need even better research skills so they can save the marine life.

New Technology A marine biologist/conserver will have more advanced technology to use. There might be equipment that will make studying easier, like microscopes with better zoom. Diving equipment might be easier to use and smaller. Oxygen tanks for diving might be able to hold more oxygen so divers can stay underwater longer.

Conclusion The new job of a marine biologist didn’t change too much. They will have to focus more on saving the marine life. The benefits of the new marine biologist over the old is that the technology will make things easier. Also the new and improved technology will make things safer.

Glossary Electron microscopes- a type of microscope that illuminates the specimen and produces a magnified image that has very strong power. Conserve/conservation- preserving, protecting, or restoring natural environment. Collaborate- working together on an activity to produce or create something. Efficient- achieving maximum productivity.
