Her learning objectives are: To gain an understanding of e-learning and pedagogy To explore the role of collaboration To explore how to find e-learning resources Note that both Melissa and myself will try to respond to issues which you raise

Who has used technologies such as Instant Messaging, Blogs, Wikis, video-conferencing, …? Who has authored materials for use in e-learning? Who has installed or managed e-learning environments? Whether you are a computer expert, scientist (or other) You can spend 5 minutes on this exercise Then give a summary to everyone E

We do not have experts (who know everything) and students (who know nothing) You can experiment in a safe environment (its better to make mistakes and get things wrong here than back at work) I am a learner too, and want to find out how useful Wikis may be in e-learning Warning: the Wikis are provided on an experimental basis.

A centre of expertise in digital information managementwww.ukoln.ac.uk 12 Session Details (1) The structure of the sessions The Key Standards and Technologies: Understanding the Fundamentals A talk an discussion on the key technological standards and applications used in e-learning E-Learning – The Users Perspective Hands-on exercises in use of a variety of e- learning and related applications, which will allow you to appreciate the end-users view Developing An E-Learning Strategy Group exercise in the initial steps in developing an e-learning strategy for your institution

A centre of expertise in digital information managementwww.ukoln.ac.uk 13 Your Involvement In order for these sessions to be effective your active participation is needed: Engage fully with the hands-on exercises (and avoid using email during class!) Participate in group exercises Contribute to group activities Ask if you are unclear Remember that you are taking part in a learning and e-learning – so reflect on your experiences Make use of appropriate electronic tools for note- taking, reviews, communications, etc. Be tolerant if things go wrong – and learn from any mistakes Remembers that e-learning is a social activity Enjoy yourself!
