C HAPTER 2 Section 1 Classifying Matter
2
W HAT IS MATTER ? Matter- anything that has mass and takes up space Examples Desks You Chair Paper Stars
3
T HINGS THAT ARE NOT MADE OF MATTER Sound Light Energy Empty Space
4
C LASSIFYING M ATTER All matter can be classified as An element A compound A mixture
6
E LEMENTS Elements are substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means Examples Carbon (C) Oxygen (O) Nitrogen (N)
7
The smallest unit of an element is an atom. Each element is made up of one type of atom.
10
A LL ELEMENTS ARE REPRESENTED BY A CHEMICAL SYMBOL The chemical symbol is one or two letters. The first letter is always capital The second letter is always lowercase
11
W HAT ARE THE CHEMICAL SYMBOLS FOR THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS ? Carbon Oxygen Nitrogen Nickel Lithium Helium
12
M OLECULES A chain of atoms linked together If two atoms are chemically bonded, it is a molecule
14
C OMPOUNDS Compounds are substances made up of atoms of different elements. Each molecule of a compound contains two or more elements that are chemically combined
15
C OMPOUNDS AND M OLECULES All compounds are molecules Not all molecules are compounds A molecule is only a compound if it is composed of more than one type of atom
16
C LASSIFY THE FOLLOWING AS A MOLECULE, COMPOUND, OR ELEMENT. C HOOSE ALL THAT APPLY C 4 - Carbon Hydrogen -H 2 Water -H 2 O N- Nitrogen NaCl – Table Salt C 12 H 6 O 12 - Sugar
17
M IXTURES A combination of substances that are not chemically combined Examples Salt Water Sugar Water Sand
18
L UCK C HARMS IS AN EXAMPLE OF A MIXTURE
19
P URE S UBSTANCES A pure substance is matter that has a fixed composition and definite properties All elements and compounds, when by themselves, are pure substances.
20
E XAMPLES OF P URE S UBSTANCES Nitrogen Oxygen Carbon Dioxide Water Diamonds Sugar
