Exploring Life Miss Napolitano & Mrs. Haas, CP Biology
2
Life! Biotic: living Abiotic: nonliving
3
Characteristics of All Living Things 1. Made up of cells 2. Reproduce 3. Genetic code (ex: DNA) 4. Growth & development 5. Obtaining & using materials 6. Response to stimuli 7. Homeostasis 8. Evolve
4
Made Up of Cells Basic structural unit of biology Can be unicellular or multicellular Unicellular: made of 1 cell Multicellular: made of 2+ cells
5
Reproduction The ability to produce offspring Can be asexual or sexual Asexual: 1 parent, makes exact clones Ex: binary fission, budding Sexual: 2 parents, makes genetically different offspring Ex: conjugation, fertilization Leads to genetic variation
6
Genetic Code Contain material that can be passed form parent to offspring Ex: DNA
7
Growth & Development Grow: increase in size Develop: changes over the course of it’s life Multicellular develop more because more complex!
8
Obtaining & Using Material Metabolism: totality of all chemical reactions within the organism to build or breakdown materials
9
Response to Environment Organisms can detect changes (stimuli) in the environment & respond Ex: Venus fly trap, pupil to light
10
Homeostasis Homeostasis: constant internal conditions Negative feedback: end product opposes/inhibits initial stimulus Ex: Body temperature, blood sugar Most common Positive feedback: end product amplifies initial stimulus Ex: Labor contractions, platelet response
11
Evolution Evolution: species change over time (not individual change!!) Adaptations: change that increases the chances of survival of an organism and its environment Stay tuned!
