2 LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Green City Get going on Robotics and Competitions!!
Contains Activity Pack, Training Mats, Green City Challenge Mat and bricks to build the models for the Challenge. In the Green City Challenge you use and develop the skills that you have just got from working on the training mats.

3 Get off to an easy start on robotics and competitions!
The Green City Challenge Set is an easy way for newcomers to get started with robotics in the classroom, and is also ideal for preparing students step by step for robotics competitions. The activities cover both beginner and more advanced levels of building, programming and testing LEGO MINDSTORMS Education robots. 4 Training mats Use the training mats to teach the children the basic programming skills before they move on to the Challenge mat. You can have several teams working on the same mat at the same time. The Training Mats are the learning areas where students can develop their programming skills as described in the Training Activities. The activity pack is ideal as a step-by-step introduction to robotics in the classroom and as preparation for robotics competitions. The seven structured and easy-to-follow Training Activities are intended to heighten students’ robotics skills in an enjoyable and challenging way. The Training Activities focus on hands-on building, programming, experimenting and problem-solving. Throughout the comprehensive Teacher’s Notes you will find everything needed for easy implementation including explanations, hints, programs, and ideas for further extensions of the activities. The Training Activities follow LEGO Education’s 4C approach: Connect, Construct, Contemplate and Continue. Each activity provides text and visuals to help students Connect to the purpose of the activity. Then the students will Construct their models, engaging both hands and minds. Next the Contemplate phase will encourage the students to carry out more activities to test and adapt their programs to specific tasks, and to reflect on what they have done. Finally they will progress to the more open-ended Continue phase, focusing on particular programming features or improving and optimizing their robots’ performance. Each Training Activity comes with a Student Worksheet. The Student Worksheets support the students’ progression through the activities as well as encouraging them to reflect on their programming.

5 Green City Challenge Mat
Get the Green City going by using Renewable Energy! The Challenge Mats combined with the Challenge models provide an engaging and motivating platform for students to creatively apply and further develop their programming and problem-solving skills. The Green City Challenge allows the students to apply and adapt all their programming and problem-solving skills by making their robots solve Challenges related to renewable energy. The Green City Challenge sets the scene for the Challenges the students have to solve. For easy differentiation there are three levels of the Green City Challenge, from the introductory Level 1 to the more advanced Level 3. For each Challenge the students are given a simple set of rules, a mission and a points system. On Level 1, students will solve the Challenges by controlling the movements of their robots. On Level 2, students will have the possibility of using sensors in their solutions to the Challenges. On Level 3, students are required to use sensors to solve some of the Challenges. All levels of the Green City Challenge are open to further possibilities for differentiation, allowing you to adjust each Challenge to just the right level of difficulty for your students. You will find some suggestions on the “Varying the Green City Challenge” page, but there are many more possibilities. At each level the score sheets make it easy to determine how many points each team has scored.

6 Green City Challenge Mat with all models
On the Green City Challenge Mat there is six models. The students have to accomplish a mission at each model. When a mission is completed, a small energy brick is released. Depending on which level you work, you have to bring the energy brick back to your base, either by hand or by the robot.

7 The Green City Challenge
Wind Turbine: The robot must activate the Wind Turbine by hitting the red button on the basse of the turbine. Solar Panel: The robot must place the Solar Panel onto the roof of the house.

8 The Green City Challenge
Sorting the Trash: The robot must collect and sort the city trash by placing the Yellow Trash Loop on the Yellow Trash Container and the Black Trash Loop on the Black Trash Container. Deploying the new smokestack: The robot must raise the new White Smokestack and knock down the old Black Smokestack.

9 The Green City Challenge
Closing the Dam: The robot must find and use the Dam Block to close the Hole in the Dam. Energizing the Green City: The robot must put at least four Energy Bricks in place and push the red holder in to activate the Green City.

10 Finding it difficult to introduce robotics to the classroom?
The Green City Challenge Set is a safe route to robotics, making it easy for beginners to get started and is also ideal for preparing both new and existing users, step by step, for robotics competitions. Students can easily connect to the real-life challenge of making a city run on Renewable Energy sources - a highly topical theme worldwide. They work together on constructing their own solutions to the challenge: They plan, build and test their models and programming, before contemplating on what they have achieved through discussion and reflection on their ideas. The learning process then continues by taking on new challenges within the Green City theme.

13 How to delete unwanted pages:
You may experience problems when sending PowerPoint presentations via etc. due to the use of many photos in the presentation = heavy file. In that situation, you may need to delete some unused master pages. Go to the View menu, select Master: Slide Master/Dias Master and delete all unused master pages by selecting them and pressing the delete button. You may want to delete this page before distributing your presentation.
