GERMINATING PEAS LAB

LAB SET UP Look on the back of your lab. Each lab table will be doing one lab set up. Each group needs: 1 beaker 3 test tubes 5 germinating peas 5 “asleep” peas 3 cotton balls A rubber band The first thing that you will need to do is go back to the lab, and fill each of your test tubes. When it comes to the part where you have to add CaO, please send one person with the three test tubes to the front so Mrs. Stapleton or I can fill them.

SET UP CONTINUED When your three test tubes are all filled, rubberband them together. In your beaker, pour 150ml of water and add 1-2 drops off food coloring. Turn the test tubes upside down in the beaker and measure how much liquid is inside the test tubes Carefully set aside until tomorrow, clean up your lab area and sit down at your desk.

WHAT IS CELLULAR RESPIRATION? C 6 H 12 O 6 + O 2  CO 2 + H 2 O + ATP Remember: ATP is the body’s personal energy currency, it allows us to have enough energy to do everything we need. And it is important because it is rechargeable which means we can use it over and over and over and over!

IN THIS LAB… We will be using two types of peas Germinating Peas which means peas that are “awake” and ready for CR Non germinating peas which are peas that are “asleep” and not ready for CR We want to see which of these two peas are performing cellular respiration Which peas should be performing CR? The germinating peas! If they are performing CR, what gas should they be producing? Carbon Dioxide

CALCIUM OXIDE CaO is a chemical called calcium oxide, it is the white powder we added to each test tube. Its job is to suck up the carbon dioxide. Normally the CO 2 would fill the empty part of the tube. If the CO 2 is being sucked up, what is going to fill the empty part instead? Water!

VARIABLES Independent Variable Type of pea used Dependent Variable Rate of cellular respiration or how much water enters each tube Control Group Test tube #3 without any peas
