Proverbs 3:11-12

 Proverbs 3:11-12 -- My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.

 Discipline  NT – PAIDEIA –to chastise, educate, train, correct, discipline  OT – MUSAR – reproof, warning, correction, instruction.

 Often it is education  Sometimes gentle correction  Sometimes rebuke  Sometimes punishment

 Proverbs 13:24 -- He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.

 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.

 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death.

 Proverbs 13:1 -- A wise son heeds his father's instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke.  Proverbs 17:10 -- A rebuke impresses a man of discernment more than a hundred lashes a fool.  How God disciplines depends on the person and the degree of the crime.

 2 Timothy 4:2 -- Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction.

 Proverbs 12:1 -- Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.  To give us knowledge

 Hebrews 12:5-10  God scourges every son He loves  It teaches endurance  Only illegitimate children go undisciplined  “He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.”

 Job 5:17 -- "Behold, how happy is the man whom God reproves, So do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.  Psalm 94:12 --Blessed is the man whom You chasten, O LORD, And whom You teach out of Your law  Revelation 3:19 -- 'Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline ; therefore be zealous and repent.

 All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful ; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.
