Henderson 12/20/09 Lesson # 51 1 Marriage & Parenting part 2 What is Parenting ? dictionary definition – the rearing of children; their care, love and guidance biblical view: In scripture the word “teaching” or “instructing” of your children is used many times examples: Proverbs 1:8 Hear, my son, your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching; Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it. 2 Corinthians 12:14 Here for this third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden to you; for I do not seek what is yours, but you; for children are not responsible to save up for their parents, but parents for their children. 1 Timothy 3:4 He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity

Henderson 12/20/09 Lesson # 51 2 Marriage & Parenting part 2 Ephesians 5:31 for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh leave and cleave (be joined) – quoted from Gen. 2:24 - leave – depart from, leave behind see 1 Thess. 3:1, Acts 18:18-19 - be joined - to cleave unto, to be joined with root word (to glue one thing to another) see Acts 8:29 - become one flesh – see Matt 19:6

Henderson 12/20/09 Lesson # 51 3 Marriage & Parenting part 2 Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. addressed to Children, but parents need to be involved obey – hypakouō - “to listen under”, and so, to submit, to obey examples: obedience to God - Heb. 5:9; Heb. 11:8; to the Gospel - Rom. 10:16; 2 Thess. 1:8 to parents - Col. 3:20 right – dikaios – in the NT denotes righteous, right conduct literally: for this is a righteous thing.

A Father’s list of do’s and don’t’s with his children !! provoke to anger - to arouse to wrath, irritation or resentment see Col. 3:21, Rom 10:19 bring them up - to nurture, to rear - see Eph 5:29 a.) discipline - paideia - denotes "the training of a child, including instruction” see 2 Tim 3:16, Heb. 12:11 b.) instruction – literally "a putting in mind" see 1 Cor 10:11
